Bis 2009 sah mein Reisen ehrlich gesagt ziemlich klassisch aus: ein bisschen Sonne in Europa, Mallorca, Pauschalurlaub. Das Interesse an fremden Kulturen und unberührter Natur war immer da – ich kannte nur noch keinen anderen Weg, sie zu entdecken.Until 2009, my travel honestly looked quite conventional: a little sun in Europe, Mallorca, package holidays. My interest in foreign cultures and untouched nature had always been there – I simply did not yet know another way to discover them.

„Kommst du mit nach Indien?““Would you come to India with me?”

Ein damaliger Arbeitskollege stellte mir diese Frage völlig unverhofft. Ich zögerte nicht lange, sagte Ja – und katapultierte mich damit direkt in mein erstes echtes Abenteuer außerhalb Europas.A colleague at the time asked me this completely unexpectedly. I did not hesitate for long, said yes – and launched myself straight into my first real adventure outside Europe.

Kulturschock – und der FunkeCulture Shock – and the Spark

Indien traf mich mit der vollen Wucht seiner Extreme: Auf der einen Seite der Kulturschock durch die schiere Masse an Menschen, die sichtbare Armut, Umweltverschmutzung und das tägliche Chaos. Auf der anderen Seite ein berauschendes Fest für die Sinne. Ich tauchte ein in eine Welle aus leuchtenden, intensiven Farben, den exotischen Düften von Straßenküchen und Gewürzmärkten und völlig neuen Geschmacksexplosionen, die meine Wahrnehmung von Essen auf den Kopf stellten. Zwischen dem Trubel gab es immer wieder tiefgehende, spirituelle Orte voller Ruhe und einer ganz besonderen Magie.India hit me with the full force of its extremes: On one side, the culture shock caused by the sheer mass of people, visible poverty, pollution and the daily chaos. On the other, an intoxicating feast for the senses. I immersed myself in a wave of luminous, intense colours, the exotic aromas of street kitchens and spice markets, and entirely new explosions of flavour that turned my perception of food upside down. Amid the bustle, I repeatedly found profound spiritual places filled with calm and a very special kind of magic.

Gleichzeitig war es das erste Mal, dass ich nur mit dem Rucksack von Station zu Station reiste – ohne den gewohnten Rückzugsort eines Resorts, ohne durchgetaktete Ausflüge, dafür mittendrin im echten, pulsierenden Alltag.At the same time, it was the first time I travelled from place to place with nothing but a backpack – without the familiar refuge of a resort, without tightly scheduled excursions, but right in the middle of real, vibrant everyday life.

Genau dort ist der Funke übergesprungen. Die Reise hat mein Weltbild und meine Wertschätzung für vieles, was zu Hause selbstverständlich wirkt, neu kalibriert.That was exactly where the spark was lit. The journey recalibrated my worldview and my appreciation for much that feels self-evident at home.

Drei längere Auszeiten haben meinen Blick auf das Reisen nachhaltig geprägt: 2015 ging es zum ersten Mal für längere Zeit nach Südostasien, 2017 folgte die Reise durch Zentralamerika und die Karibik, bevor es mich 2022 wieder nach Asien zog. Auf diesen Routen spürte ich erst so richtig, was es heißt, kompromisslos frei zu sein. Plötzlich gab es keinen durchgeplanten Ablauf mehr – Pläne, Uhrzeiten und feste Wege verloren völlig an Bedeutung. Du reist nicht mehr nach einem starren Zeitplan, sondern lässt dich einfach vom Fluss der Ereignisse leiten. Die schönsten Orte entdeckte ich nie in Reiseführern, sondern durch Begegnungen, gute Gespräche und spontane Tipps am Lagerfeuer. Wenn dir abends jemand von einem magischen Ort erzählt, packst du am nächsten Morgen die Sachen und ziehst weiter.Three extended breaks have had a lasting influence on the way I see travel: in 2015, I spent a longer period in Southeast Asia for the first time; in 2017, a journey through Central America and the Caribbean followed; and in 2022, I was drawn back to Asia. It was on these routes that I truly understood what it means to be uncompromisingly free. Suddenly, there was no fully planned itinerary – plans, schedules and fixed routes lost all importance. You no longer travel according to a rigid timetable; you simply let the flow of events guide you. I never discovered the most beautiful places in guidebooks, but through encounters, good conversations and spontaneous tips around a campfire. When someone tells you about a magical place in the evening, you pack your things the next morning and move on.
