Hier sind meine wichtigsten Learnings, die jede Reise entspannter, günstiger und flexibler machen. After countless countries, climate zones, and miles on the road, a few golden rules eventually crystallize. Here are my key learnings that make every trip more relaxed, more affordable, and much more flexible.

Die goldene Packregel: Halbiere dein Gepäck! The Golden Packing Rule: Halve your luggage!

Der wohl häufigste Fehler: Man packt für den „Fall der Fälle“. Am Ende schleppt man Kleidung durch die Gegend, die man kein einziges Mal anhatte. Probably the most common mistake: packing for the "just in case" scenarios. In the end, you lug clothes around that you didn't wear a single time.

Mein Learning:My Learning: Packe leicht! Du brauchst viel weniger, als du denkst. Erstens gibt es fast überall auf der Welt Wäscheservices (Laundry) für ein paar Euro. Zweitens: Sollte wirklich etwas fehlen, ist Kleidung in vielen Ländern (gerade in Asien oder Südamerika) deutlich günstiger als in Deutschland. Kauf dir das T-Shirt im Zweifel einfach vor Ort und schone deinen Rücken. Pack light! You need much less than you think. First, laundry services are available almost everywhere in the world for a few dollars. Second: if something is really missing, clothing in many countries (especially in Asia or South America) is significantly cheaper than in Europe. If in doubt, just buy the T-shirt locally and save your back.

Wichtig vorab: Prüfe einmal in den Einstellungen deines Smartphones, ob dein Gerät bereits E-SIM-fähig ist (bei fast allen neueren Modellen Standard). Manchmal lohnt sich auch ein kurzer Gegencheck direkt auf der Website des Hotels. Sometimes a quick double-check directly on the hotel's website is also worthwhile.

In den Bergen, im tiefsten Dschungel oder bei schlechtem Netz verlässt man sich besser nicht auf eine dauerhafte Internetverbindung. In the mountains, deep in the jungle, or with poor network coverage, it is better not to rely on a permanent internet connection.

Mein Tipp:My Tip: Lade dir vorab die Region bei Maps.me oder Organic Maps herunter. Diese OpenStreetMap-basierten Karten sind im Offline-Modus oft detailreicher, was Wanderwege, Trampelpfade und kleine Guest Houses angeht, als Google Maps. Download the region in advance via Maps.me or Organic Maps. These OpenStreetMap-based maps are often more detailed in offline mode regarding hiking trails, tracks, and small guest houses than Google Maps.

Finanzen: Das Zwei-Karten-System Finance: The Two-Card System

Nichts ist stressiger, als wenn die Kreditkarte im Ausland plötzlich gesperrt wird (z. B. wegen „verdächtiger Aktivitäten“ beim Geldabheben) oder der Automat sie verschluckt. Reisepass weg, Führerschein weg – der absolute Albtraum auf jeder Reise weit weg von der Heimat. Passport gone, driver's license gone – the absolute nightmare on any trip far away from home.

Mein Tipp:My Tip: Scanne alle wichtigen Dokumente (Pass, Visa, Impfpass, Führerschein, Auslandskrankenversicherung) ein und speichere sie verschlüsselt in einer Cloud, auf die du auch im Notfall vom Smartphone eines Fremden oder im Internetcafé zugreifen kannst. Ein zusätzlicher Ausdruck ganz unten im Rucksack schadet ebenfalls nicht. Scan all important documents (passport, visas, vaccination card, driver's license, international health insurance) and store them encrypted in a cloud that you can access in an emergency even from a stranger's smartphone or an internet cafe. An additional paper printout at the very bottom of your backpack doesn't hurt either.
